Planning Mom and Dad’s Move

Planning Mom and Dad’s Move

You have convinced Mom and Dad that they need to move. Now what?

A little bit of planning will go a long way and here are a few helpful tips that can help you.

First, where to begin:

·         Create a plan – and break it down into small pieces.

·         Be realistic with deadlines.

What do you need to think about?

·         Getting rid of things. Most people have a lot of down-sizing to do.

·         Start going through things one room at a time. You will need TOSS, RECYCLE, DONATE and KEEP piles.

·         Where do you want to donate items?

·         Is it time to pass along some heirlooms to future generations?

·         When your parents have a hard time letting go of sentimental items, you can always take a picture of it so they have some reminder. This can sometimes help the anxiety of letting go.

What work needs to be done to the house in preparation for selling?

·         Start a list of what needs to be done to the house – things like painting, replacing carpets, fixing landscaping, bathroom repairs, etc.

·         Will you be doing the work yourself or hiring it out?

Do I sell the estate to someone who buys houses outright and let them take it off our hands  or do we list it and then do the work to it:

·         There are companies that will do a complete buyout without you going through everything and making any repairs and other companies that will sell your house when you have completed all the repairs and moved things out.

·         Make a list of the pros and cons of each way of selling your house.

Find someone to help chart a plan and a path to follow:

·         If you are having difficulties putting a plan together, get help. Being proactive can save you some stress later and having that plan in place will keep you on task.
